Join the Public Square at the IHC, the American Friends Service Committee, and the Chicago Cultural Center for a conversation with Sean Sutton.
Sutton's Surviving the Peace exhibition, on display for the first time in the United States at the Chicago Cultural Center, provides an intimate look at the challenges faced by survivors as they emerge from war and how the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) helps to rebuild lives in countries such as Iraq, Sudan, and Lebanon. Sutton will discuss his work and experience as a photojournalist, the issue of landmines, and the humanitarian work of MAG.
The conversation with Sutton will be led by scholar W.J.T. Mitchell, a professor of English and Art History at the University of Chicago who is especially known for his work on the relations of visual and verbal representations in the context of social and political issues. The Surviving the Peace exhibition will be on display at the Chicago Cultural Center's Michigan Avenue Galleries from March 10 to April 29, 2007. These remarkable black and white photographs were captured by Sutton over ten years of working as photographer for MAG in conflict-affected countries around the world.
